HKMU has put in place a Research Policy and Operational Procedures in order to guide the academic staff of this University to undertake research. The policy catalyses the evolution of a culture of Research at HKMU. Through its continued search for new knowledge, HKMU will generate new research topics. Creation of a conducive environment for enhancement of a culture of research and publication, is a critical step in the growth of HKMU during its formative years.

The promotion of academic staff is mainly based on research output. Already HKMU is collaborating with Yale University , Southern Connecticut State University, and MUCHS-GTZ on Genetic, Palaeoanthropology and Telemedicine research initiatives, respectively. There is a Human Molecular Genetics Laboratory in place for research on Human variation and other genetic issues.

The institute coordinates postgraduate training and HKMU research activities.
