The University was pioneered by its Founder
the late Professor Hubert Clemence Mwombeki Kairuki,
after whom it was named following his death in February
1999. At its inception it was known as Mikocheni International
University of Health Sciences.
HKMU is owned and directed by a Non Governmental Organization,
the Mission Mikocheni Health and Education Network
(MMHEN).
HKMU is one of the
four sister institutions envisaged to be operational
under the umbrella of the MMHEN, Mission Mikocheni
Hospital (MMH), which currently serves as the University's
teaching hospital; HKMU; Mission Mikocheni Ordinary
Education (MMOE); and Mission Mikocheni Foundation
(MMF).

University Chancellor |
| |
Dr.
Salim Ahmed Salim is the Chancellor.
With distinguished career in the Tanzania Diplomatic
Corps Service, and former Secretary General
of the then Organization of the African Unity
(OAU), now the African Union (AU), Dr. Salim
is currently Chairman of the Mwalimu Nyerere
Foundation (MNF).

The
University top management comprises the Vice-Chancellor
Prof. Keto Elitabu Mshigeni,
assisted by two Deputies one for Academic Affairs(Dr.
Paschalis Rugarabamu), and the other for Finance,
Planning, and Administration(vacant), Deans
of the faculties of Medicine(Dr. Felician Rutachunzibwa)
and Nursing(Prof. Pauline P. Mella), Director
of Postgraduate Studies and Research Institute(Dr.
Sylvester Kajuna) and Chairpersons of departments.

University Statutory Participatory Organs |

The participatory organs
of the University are the Board of Trustees
chaired by Mrs. Kokushubila Kairuki, the co-founder
of HKMU; the University Council, chaired by
Prof. Frederick Kaijage; Senate, and Faculty
Boards.

| Calendar |
The
university calendar is semester based. An academic
year starts in October and ends in August every
year. Each semester has 22 weeks with breathers
in between.

| Networking |
The
HKMU is a member, and was the first Chair of
the Tanzania Association of Private Universities
(TAPU). HKMU is also the founder and a member
of Universities and College of Health Sciences
Forum in Tanzania .
Moreover HKMU
is a member of the Inter University Council
for East African Universities (IUCEA). HKMU
has collaborative links with external institutions
of higher learning like Yale University, Harvard
University, and the South Connecticut State
University in the USA .
